Scgis' Train-the-Trainer program was started by John Schaeffer of Juniper GIS in 2011, as an outgrowth of his many years supporting the annual SCGIS International Scholarship Program. John realized that teaching scholars how to teach was like teaching someone how to fish, you begin a virtuous cascade of education and capacity. TTT trains and certifies conservation GIS teachers all over the world, who then teach local classes about Conservation GIS to dozens more local activists and scientists. TTT Certification is an intense international process that begins with participation in the annual SCGIS Scholarship Program, then adds on formal teacher training, and formal work experience internships as assistant trainers. 5 to 10 new trainers are certified and added each year, with special attention to parts of the world far away from any existing trainer. In 2014, funding from Esri allowed the TTT program to become an official program of SCGIS, run by the TTT leadership team of Karen Beardsley, Leslie Backus and Carlitos DeAngelo (see below)
