In Memoriam

A page dedicated to the memories and condolances of SCGIS Scholars who have passed.

Tonyo Uybad, SCGIS Scholar 2011

Sunday, June 5, 2016, from Diana : I hope everyone is well. I am writing to inform you that our friend Tonyo Uybad recently passed away last June 3 in his hometown in Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro (Philippines). He was currently seated as a representative in the local government council before his untimely death.
I just learned of the news today through a common friend who is from his hometown. I don't have much information, but I was told that the cause of death may be due to complications brought about by tuberculosis. His funeral will be this coming Tuesday. May we keep him in our thoughts and memories.

Karen Beardsley - This is extremely sad news. Thank you for letting us know. My heart goes at to Tonyo’s family and friends.

John Schaeffer - I was very sad to hear this news as I am reminded of Tonyo each time I use my phone. The attached picture is my wallpaper and you can see the bracelet Tonyo gave me in Davis. I never took it off after he gave that to me, and it finally broke, but each time I open my phone I see it and think of Tonyo. Please pass my condolances to Tonyo's family.

Leslie Backus - Thank you for sharing this news. Currently, we are conducting the scholarship program at a UC Berkley reserve and this news is a reminder of how important each and every one of our scholars are. I hope you all remember, that there is a place for each of you in our hearts, and we wish you all health in your lives!

Phillip Kihumuro - This news has shocked my Monday morning as I was off the radar the entire weekend(attending to funerals upcountry of some close family)
The humble, cool headed Filipino whom I met in Davis, with his curly hair and always listening. He was such a gem. I was blessed to have shared a room with him while we went down to San Diego for the ESRI User Conference.
We will miss him greatly! I request that Diana puts together these messages and somewhat deliver the message to his family as our tribute to this scholar.
If it suits the Program of the current scholars, I beg to move that a minute's silence in his honour is observed
Rest in Peace! Tonyo Uybad

Cecilia - How sad.... Thanks Diana for letting us know. Please let his family know that he has friends all over the world who will always remember him as part of this very special group.

Sasha - This is very sad indeed. Tonyo was very dedicated to the important work he was doing, he stayed in touch about his GIS work, and he was simply such a nice, pleasant person to know. He made a bracelet for me as well, I still have it. I will wear it at the SCGIS conference in his memory.
